The Healty Side Coffee

In fact, it's been linked to a variety of health benefits. Did you know that one study shows even one cup of coffee each day can cut your risk for Parkinson's disease in half?

Coffee's full of healthful components like magnesium, potassium and vitamin B3. And coffee is the American's number one source of antioxidants, says one 2005 study from the University of Scranton. Another study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that one cup of coffee can have more antioxidants than a serving of blueberries or oranges. Antioxidants play a key role in reducing the inflammation which is associated with many health problems ranging from heart disease to rheumatoid arthritis.

Dr. Joe Vinson, a chemistry professor who led the Scranton study, says, "Antioxidants are your army to protect you from the toxic free radicals, which come from breathing oxygen and eating sugar, that start chronic diseases. Antioxidants help stave off cancer, heart disease, diabetes and stroke."

It may be the high level of antioxidants that helps coffee protect the heart. Researchers from Norway looked at data involving more than 27,000 women in the Iowa Women's Health Study and found women who drank 1-3 cups of coffee each day had a 24 percent reduction in risk of heart disease compared with women who didn't drink coffee at all. Women who drank as much as five cups a day showed up to a 19 percent decrease in risk of death from all causes. However, the study also concluded that more is not always better. Drinking more than six cups of coffee per day did not seem to increase benefits significantly.

Analysis of a collection of studies from the Journal of the American Medical Association showed evidence that consuming coffee can lower the risk of developing type II diabetes. Studies which looked at decaffeinated coffee showed similar results. The benefits increased with the amount of coffee drank: up 28 percent for those who drank at least four cups per day, and up 35 percent for people who drank more than six.

However, just because coffee is good for you doesn't mean you should overload your body with caffeine. Rob van Dam is a Harvard scientist and the lead author of a study which showed the amount of caffeine in just two cups of coffee can constrict blood flow to the heart.

"I wouldn't advise people to increase their consumption of coffee in order to lower their risk of disease," says Dr. Van Dam, "but the evidence is that for most people without specific conditions, coffee is not detrimental to health. If people enjoy drinking it, it's comforting to know that they don't have to be afraid of negative health effects."

Fortunately, most of these benefits can still be enjoyed if you drink decaffeinated coffee, so you don't have to take in surplus caffeine just for the antioxidants' sake. How To Talk To Men

Have you ever gone out for dinner or coffee with a man you were really interested in, only to find that keeping the conversation going was a struggle?

Have you ever wanted to REALLY connect with a man on an emotional level, only to find that he wasn't interested at all in talking about his feelings?

What these scenarios have in common is a basic misunderstanding of how and why men communicate. While you're trying to talk to a man in the same way you'd like to be talked to, he may be wishing that you could just stop talking for a minute so that he could gather his thoughts or just enjoy being in the moment.

It's a complaint as old as time: men think that women talk too much, while women think that men talk too little.

So how can you talk to a man in a way that will establish a connection and make him happy? In this article, I'm going to give you three tips to improve your communication with men.

1. Allow him space to think.

While we're used to jumping in with our thoughts and continuing passionately until we're interrupted, not all men feel as if they can think with an impassioned woman talking at them. Say what you have to say, then stop and allow him time to work things through in his head.

Don't get upset if you have to sit in silence for a minute or two while he figures out what he wants to say. He's not giving you the silent treatment. He's just processing what you said so that he can give you the best response possible.

Similarly, if your man is the quiet type, avoid interrupting him. He wants to feel that you're listening to him, and this requires you to sit patiently for however long it takes him to get out what he wants to say. Active listening will encourage your man to share his thoughts more often, because he knows that you'll listen to what he has to say.

2. Be direct.

One of men's major complaints about women's communication style is that "they don't just come out and said what they mean."

For example, most women will drop hints about what they want for a Christmas present and get upset when their partner doesn't pick up the clues. Men don't enjoy little games like this. If you keep a man guessing, he's more likely to get frustrated than figure it out.

So master the art of being direct. If a man asks you where you want to go on a date, only tell him that you don't care if you actually DON'T care. If there's a particular restaurant that you've been dropping hints about, tell him point-blank that you'd like to go. It won't diminish the pleasure of the experience, I promise!

3. Draw a man out with activities, not with confrontations.

There's no better way to ensure that a man will clam up than confronting him about his "inadequate" communication skills. Asking a man, "Why won't you talk to me? Why won't you open up?" will simply make him feel like you've put him on the spot, and his stubbornness will kick in.

You must remember that men are socialized to express their emotions through activity rather than words. A father will applaud his son for getting his aggression out on the football field, but if that son tries to talk to his father about his feelings, he'll be most likely be met with a blank wall.

Men defend themselves when they feel they've been emotionally attacked by withdrawing behind what I call their "blank wall." Their faces go blank. They become emotionless, logical debaters. They seek to win the argument even at the cost of hurting you.

Avoid triggering this defensive mechanism by using activities to draw out your man. You may want to go mini-golfing, go to an amusement park, or go for a hike. The most important criterion is that it is physical; going to the movies or to dinner doesn't count. You get extra points if you choose an activity that requires you to work as a team.

As you focus on the activity rather than the lack of communication, you may very well find that you can rebuild your intimacy as a couple without needing words. Better yet, as he experiences the satisfaction of demonstrating his skills through activity, he may become comfortable enough to open up to you and share things he would have never said if you'd sat down face to face.

The research, just published in the April issue of the journal Cancer Research, concludes that a receptor dubbed GPR109A is activated by butyrate, a metabolite produced by fiber-eating bacteria found in the colon. The result? The receptor sends signals that cause a process known as apoptosis, the death of cancer cells. What's more, the receptor also blocks a protein that causes inflammation. That's important because inflammation is known to be a precursor to cancer.

"We know the receptor is silenced in cancer but it's not like the gene goes away," Dr. Vadivel Ganapathy, corresponding author and chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the MCG School of Medicine, said in a statement to media.

Cancer typically gets the upper hand because the disease can shut down the cancer-fighting receptor by chemically modifying its gene. This process, technically known as DNA methylation, allows malignancies to turn genes off that would thwart the cancer's growth. That explains why drug companies are working on therapies called DNA methylation inhibitors as possible cancer treatments. But it appears eating large amounts of roughage could activate butyrate and fight cancer, naturally.

"Colon cancer does not want butyrate produced by bacteria to come inside so it silences the transporter. It also does not want butyrate to act on the cell from the outside so it silences the receptor," Dr. Ganapathy explained in the media statement. "It does not want to have anything to do with butyrate... We think receptor activation by butyrate suppresses inflammation, thereby suppressing progression of inflamed cells into cancer cells."

The MCG researchers suggest cancer patients could benefit by taking high doses of butyrate -- but the substance tastes terrible. Instead, Dr. Ganapathy has suggested taking large amounts of the B vitamin niacin; this could spur the same anti-cancer activity that butyrate does, so it may prove to be a good substitute. Moreover, he is planning to conduct clinical trials that compare the course of colon cancer patients who eat a high fiber diet or receive butyrate or niacin therapy along with taking DNA methylation inhibitors that activate GPR109A.

Read labels. There are some items that should be avoided and some items that you should look for in makeup for oily skin. There are certain makeup companies that are known for their work in designing products for specific skin types. I recommend Clinique. It has a reputation for excellent care and products. I also like Jane Iredale Cosmetics. This is a mineral based line used by many dermatologists.

  • Avoid products containing oil from petroleum. This includes mineral oil. Use oil-free makeup or makeup that is intended to benefit oily skin.
  • Avoid makeup that contains alcohol. Alcohol will strip the skin of oil, which may cause the body to produce even more.
  • Look for ingredients such as bismuth oxychloride and dimenthicone. Both can clog pores and may cause blemishes. These are commonly found in foundation or powder based products.
  • Find foundations that contain titanium dioxide, a naturally occurring sun protector.
  • Makeup for oily skin should contain serecite to reduce the appearance of pores and help absorb oil.
  • Kaolin clay added in foundation will help oil control.

Their paths never crossed except at a church social, perhaps, or in situations that were specifically created to foster romance and, by extension, procreation and the continuation of the species. (Not the stuff sonnets are made of, perhaps, but good for society.)

That was then. This is now.

Beat Stress and Stay Cucumber Cool

Things aren't going quite right, frustration setting in, you can feel your blood pressure rising? Here's some helpful tips to keep you cool as a cucumber. - Having a bath can soothe the soul and the body. Add your favourite scent, add some candles, close your eyes and relax or grab your favorite book. Close the door and tell everyone it's your time out and you're not to be disturbed. - Get outside and excercise. Excercising releases endorphins and alleviates tension. Something as simple as a power walk can do wonders for your mood and stress level. If possible take a walk away from the urban distractions. If there is a trail or park where you can retreat it will do wonders for your sanity. Between the walk, the flower fragrances, and the smell of fresh air you'll be feeling better in no time at all. - If you awaken feeling stressed. Take a few minutes to calm your body. For one minute breath in deeply through your nose and out through your mouth. Get out of bed and do 20 jumping jacks or run on the spot for 30 seconds to get your energy flowing. Eat a healthy breakfast and then decide what one goal or task your going to complete for the day. - Don't stress yourself out by writing out a task list that is simply too big to manage. Instead choose 5 most important things you need to accomplish that day. List them from most important [must complete] to least important. Once you've accomplished those 5 tasks you can start a new list. - Take time out - meditate for five minutes. Using a light pressure, push the palms of your hands into your closed eyes. Slowly release and take deep breaths, then push your palms back into your eyes. Repeat for 3-4 minutes, then rest your head in your hands, relax, and take deep breaths before lifting your head. - Stretching is an excellent way to relieve tension and stress. Stretching will release tension from your neck and back. - Stop and think about a situation or place that makes you happy. This is rather like a recess or time out. By thinking pleasant thoughts your stress level can be dramatically lowered. - Slow down. Rushing can cause your stress levels to rise. Plan your appointements and commitments so that you have ample time to get from point a to b. Start your day by leisurely getting dressed and applying your makeup. This will set the tone for your day and help keep you de-stressed. - Vitamins can be a great help in reducing stress. Take a multi-vitamin daily. Have B Stress vitamins on hand for those very busy or stressful days. Eat foods high in magnesium, Vitamin C, and B5. - Reduce your caffeine intake. - Seek calmness. If the living room feels chaotic and stressful then take five minutes and remove yourself to somewhere tranquil and peaceful. It could be a deck, your bedroom, or your front lawn. - Music is a wonderful stress reliever. Put on your favourite cd and sit still and listen for at least 15 minutes, 1/2 hour is even better. Playing music while you accomplish your tasks can also reduce stress. - Carry your favorite bottle of essential oil in your purse. When stress feels like its about to get the better of you. Open the cap and inhale deeply. Camomile and lavender are universal stress busters but you can choose any calming oil that appeals to you. - Breath deep - breathe up from the bottom of your feet through your body and up to your third eye [between your eyebrows]. When you inhale imagine your body melting away. Deep breathing can stop stress in it's tracks.

Aromatherapy for a Broken Heart

The heart is a very fragile and strong organ. It is the center of our being and a very vulnerable focal point. The heart plays a role in every function of the body. It can be "hurt", "lost" and left in San Francisco. It can also "skip a beat" or be attacked by a stroke. Our heart is our life force and in Chinese medicine it is the fire element. Yet it can "fail" us, as in heart failure. The heart has rhythm and can block, just not in a football game. Sometime, our heart talks to us with sounds and murmurs. There are some people who listen to their hearts speak to them while others have not listened and may have taken a path of least resistance. There is time, however, that we all listen when our heart speaks to us. That time is when there is what is called a broken heart.

When the heart is broken, a spectrum of feelings is manifested. These feelings consist of hurt, pain, anger, sadness, relief and forgiveness. In the process of living with these feelings and going through the experience of having a broken heart, what happens physically and emotionally to women?

In my practice, many women have scheduled an appointment with me for an annual gynecological examination or they were returning for their weekly obstetrical examination. Within the first few minutes of interviewing the patient about her medical history since the last visit, I realize there is a strong emotional and physical component to the visit that is not directly related to what is considered a routine exam. In essence, the emotional and physical components are indicative of a broken heart. I make a holistic assessment of the patient's medical history, emotional, spiritual, physical and clinical findings. These cases may warrant a referral to a specialist, depending on her status at that moment. A follow up visit is always scheduled.

Throughout time, it has been said individuals have died of a broken heart. For instance, a wife died and then her husband died from natural causes within a week or a sister died and her sibling died naturally very soon thereafter. Were the subsequent deaths just a coincidence or did they die from a broken heart?

Researchers have started scientifically looking at such cases and calling it the Broken Heart Syndrome. In health care terminology we call this condition stress Cardiomyopathy. Cardiomyopathy is heart muscle weakness. It can occur after various emotional and physical stressors such as fear, surprise, anger and the death of a loved one. Stress cardiomyopathy affects primarily women and occurs most frequently in middle aged women and women over age sixty. Many of the women that have been studied have no prior history of heart disease and the majorities are postmenopausal. There is no known reason for the increase frequency in women in these age groups and postmenopausal women in particular. Physical stressors can fuel a stroke or seizure and as mentioned emotional stressors such as fear, grief and anger can cause this condition.

Women with dis-stressed can suddenly and unexpectedly experience a heavy feeling in the chest, shortness of breath, abnormal rhythm of the heart, low blood pressure, congestive heart failure and shock. It can be life threatening. She may appear sad, express feelings of sadness, lock of concentration and difficulty sleeping at night. The good news is there can also be a quick and complete recovery.

Aromatherapy is a fantastic complementary therapy. One hundred percent essential oils are more potent than herbs -less is better than more. They are volatile oils which are obtained directly from the root, flower petals, leaves or skins of fruit. The price can range from approximately five dollars to several hundred dollars for a half ounce. It takes 2000 pounds of rose petals to make one pound of oil. Therefore there is a variance in the cost of essential oils. The essential oils widely used to restore the heart are Rose Otto, Jasmine sambac, Neroli, Rosewood, and Lavender. Essential oil blends can be used through inhalation and application methods. They can be inhaled by using a diffuser, sniffed directly from the bottle (less expensive oils) or they can be used in the bath/shower or through vapor and nebulizer. They can be applied by massage or as perfume oil.

Lavender has a long history as a medicine and perfume. In Chinese medicine it circulates heart Qi. It can restore vitality, relieve tension and calm a person. Dried lavender buds can be added to the bath or a tea can be made from the dried herb. To make a single note lavender perfume oil add three drops of 100% Highland or Bulgarian lavender essential oil to one tablespoon of jojoba oil. Jojoba oil is a stable carrier oil, won't rancid and is relatively odorless. The benefits of essential oils are numerous. However, care must be taken in using them. Aromatherapy is very technical. One oil can cancel out the effects of another oil. Some oils are toxic and what may benefit one person may have no effect on another person. One fragrance may be pleasant to one person and offensive to another. Determine which oil is best for you. Our behavior is affected by the aromatic scent. They also help the body regulate itself and come into balance. Therefore the stressors and feelings produced by a broken are relieved with the consistent use of aromatherapy. -Johnetta Miner

It is often quoted that females have a lower tolerance to alcohol than males and this is an indisputable fact but few people ever go on to tell exactly what the affect is and why. Hopefully this article will help shed light on exactly what happens when you drink alcohol and why you often do things that you regret later. Also give some insight into what alcohol actually does to the brain. This is not an anti alcohol article, it is presented in the hope that knowledge will influence attitude. The fact that this article is being published at the height of the Christmas/New Year festive season is coincidental; it contains valuable knowledge that is useful at all times.

Alcohol is a testosterone stimulant and the affect it has on women is based upon the fact that testosterone is not the dominant hormone in the female make-up, therefore they are usually unable to control the affect of testosterone as men do on a daily, even hourly, basis. Dealing with the bravado that testosterone produces is not a common experience to a woman and therefore they rarely know how to cope with it. This explains why they are more prone to carrying out acts that are normally not in their nature when drinking. The stimulation of testosterone initially makes them loud as the bravado affect kicks in; a feeling of invincibility that leads them to drop all inhibitions follows this. If there is a dance floor they are liable to seek it as a challenge to dance with a view to drawing self-attention. They meet with strangers when stimulated testosterone has them feeling invincible and there is no need for me to point out the dangers that this can create.

As the affect of alcohol dwindles and the real self re-appears there is true self-doubt regarding what they may, or may not, have done and whether they can face the people they were celebrating with again. This is caused by the lack of testosterone stimulation and the reassertion of the true personality as opposed to the testosterone induced personality that occurs whilst drinking.

The other affects that leave terrible hangovers to contend with are so well known that I will not go into them in this article. Hopefully if you have knowledge concerning why you become vulnerable while drinking you will be more careful concerning the quantity that you drink; especially when you are not in the home environment with trusted family and friends around you.

To have a drink can be fun, just be aware of what happens to your body and mind when you have too many. The stimulation of testosterone starts with the first sip.

A hangover is the result of alcohol dehydrating your body. Try to drink at least a quart (1 liter) of water between drinking and bed to help re-hydrate your body. -David McCarthy

1) Let your work space become your friend and not your weight gain coach. We all love to eat snacks while surfing the Internet for hours. Snacks are Ok to eat. Eating fresh snacks when sitting at your Laptop computer will help you lose weight. Toss the cookies, candy and junk food sitting on your desk in the trash. Now replace them with fresh fruit or veggie's like apples and carrots. In no time at all, you will feel better about yourself and have more energy. 2) Sometimes, the only thing we move is our eyes, hands and fingers when sitting at our computer. This does little for circulation or to burn calories. The next time you are using your laptop try moving a few more body parts. Pretend you are sitting in front of an old time musical organ. The type that had pedals underneath you pushed to make the sound. Now, as you are using your laptop computer pretend you are sitting at the musical organ. Start pushing those pedals. Lift one foot a few inches from the floor and gently push it back down. Now do the other foot. Do a set of 15-20 reps. Rest, breath and repeat. Do this mini-workout several times an hour. This will help get your circulation going, give you more energy and lose weight. Soon you will be doing this mini-workout during the day without thinking about it.

3) Start drinking acai berry juice along with bottled water when sitting at your laptop computer. Great Skin Scrub Recipes -- FREE!

Body scrubs have always been a beauty must. Cleopatra's hand maidens rubbed her down with granulated honey and myrrh, a "royal" version of the scrubs of pumice, barley hulls and goat's milk used by lesser Egyptians of the day. Body scrubs have become very popular lately, with recipes including grains, nut shells, sea shells, salts and other minerals scraping away the layers and leaving fresh, new skin behind.

It is so simple to make your own body scrub! You may have noticed that you're paying a lot of dough for a handful of scrub in the fancy retail stores. Read the ingredients: you're paying for sexy packaging! Most scrubs contain salt, sugar or nut shells and you can buy any of those things for well under fifty cents a pound. But the seven ounce jar of scrub from You Know Where sells for $17 or more. How long does it take to use up less than one cup of body scrub? Not long!

You choose the natural ingredients to exfoliate and make your own body polish! Choose your favorite fragrances, control the granularity of the scrub, avoid ingredients that you may be allergic to, and create a big potful of body polish with about $10 worth of ingredients. Or you can make a cupful for under a dollar and decide if you like the recipe.

It's a breeze: you'll need a spoon, a bowl, and a container for storage.
Sugar works great as a cheap exfoliating ingredient. Sugar isn't as harsh as ground nut shells: it melts fast when it hits moisture, and if your skin is delicate, you're probably not going to over-scrub it. The other benefit is the fact that sugar, unlike pumice, ground shells and other insoluble ingredients, will melt instead of sticking in your bathtub drains.

Here's what you need to make a large batch:

  • 8 Cups raw or light brown sugar
  • 1 ½ to 2 Cups avocado, untoasted sesame oil or jojoba oil
  • ½ to 1 Cup apricot or peach kernel oil
  • essential oil (we used ginger and vanilla)
  • honey for smoothing the texture
  • If you use raw sugar, you will probably want more oil because raw sugar has a coarser texture than light brown sugar. Raw sugar, being a specialty ingredient, also costs a lot more than brown sugar. You can use either form of sugar, just make sure that with the brown sugar, you're keeping a careful eye on the liquid ingredients so your scrub doesn't dissolve into a thin paste. Use honey only if you find your scrub is too dry, or just increase the amount of oil you use instead. Mix oils into the sugar slowly, stirring to keep the consistency smooth, and stop when you can form the mixture into a slightly wet ball without it dripping through your fingers. Add the essential oils last: they are for fragrance, not moisture, and you'll only need a few drops—maybe eight—to get the aroma strong enough. Let your nose be your guide. Some smells are overpowering and others more subtle. I find that I have to use more of the subtler scents. Never use "fragrance oils"—they are chemical fakes that have never been near a plant and can cause irritation or even allergic symptoms. Instead, make sure to use essential oils, which are the true plant oils expressed by pressing or by steam distillation from the actual plants. Before choosing an essential oil, make sure that it is considered to be good for the skin—some essential oils are irritants and are meant for other purposes. Some skin friendly oils include rose, rosemary, lemon, mandarin, lavender and chamomile.

    Salt is also an excellent exfoliant. In this body scrub, you can substitute 8 cups of coarse or kosher salt for the sugar in the recipe above. The nice thing about do-it-yourself scrubs is that you can then vary the ingredients to make your own favorite scents. Instead of essential oils, you may decide to add cocoa or coffee for a chocolate or mocha body scrub. Add vanilla; your scrub will smell fantastic.

  • Here's how:

    • 8 Cups coarse pickling or Kosher salt.
    • 2 Cups avocado, untoasted sesame oil or jojoba oil
    • 1 Cup apricot or peach kernel oil
    • 1 Cup unsweetened cocoa or ¼ Cup freeze dried coffee crystals
    • 2 Tablespoons vanilla extract
    • honey for smoothing the texture

    When you make your own scrubs, you can afford to use the best ingredients. Add a handful of ground, dried white tea leaves to your body scrub and follow it up with natural cucumber extract for a soothing, summery fragrance. With some practice, you'll understand how to make practically any scrub you want.
